Disabling USB port when Pro box is in standby

Go to solution

Hey guys,

I am using a usb strip light to create illumination behind my TV. The USB port on my TV doesn't seem to have enough power output for the light but I have success with the usb port on the pro TV box.

However, the box continues to power the strip light even when it's standby.

Is there a way to adjust usb port settings, so it kills off the power and light when I turn off the TV box via remote?

I've had a mooch around the box settings and it doesn't seem possible. I'll check internally, but figured you guys might already know.

AFAIK, the USB port has no user functionality, it was only ever loosely defined as a service port. So I suspect the only way to kill it's output would be to alter the standby settings. But then you face waiting a fortnight for the thing to boot, even if that does work.

So you'll probably need to look to another device for power. Do you have a Bluray player with a USB?

Does the TV have a second USB? Sometimes one will have a higher current rating than the other. Or back in the days when USB powered HDDs first became a thing, they would often come with a double-headed cable for the same reason, lack of current from a single port. Maybe have a scout round for some sort of splitter.

Edit: they do exist!

Given what the port is used for, accessibility features including keyboard for users who can’t use a remote, I would predict that it has to stay powered up so such users can power on the YouView box from standby.

Does your TV by any chance have a USB port with a blue divider in it? This would be a more powerful USB3 port that should do the job. The One Connect box for our kitchen/diner Samsung JS9000 has such a USB port, and I recall being disappointed I couldn’t charge my drone from it except when the TV was on, so it is definitely switched.

I suspect that as the USB port is available to plug in an accessible keyboard/keypad for box control it remains powered in standby to allow a keyboard user to bring the box out of standby.

I stand corrected on the keyboard function of the USB port!

@NickBS

If the Pro box is like earlier Youview boxes, power to the USB socket goes off when the box goes into deep standby.

If manual control is acceptable, then you could use a switch in the power cable.

I use something similar to this to control power a Bluetooth audio receiver that I don't want running continuously:

Try searching on a shopping site for "USB Switch Cable" or similar.

I used a strip light when I had the Pro box. I adjusted the settings to deep sleep overnight and return to standby at midday. Worked perfectly for me, try selecting a time to suit your working day.
