Outgoing mail problems in Thunderbird

Go to solution

Morning all

I use the latest version of Thunderbird as my email client and have my primary account set up as POP3. I recently changed the password on my my primary BT email account.

When I next used this account to send mail in Thunderbird, I entered the new BT email password when prompted (by Thunderbird).

When I sent the message, it failed. Cancelling the message brought up this error message
-----------------------------------------------
Sending of the message failed.
Unable to authenticate to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.btinternet.com. Please check the password and verify the 'Authentication method' in 'Account Settings | Outgoing server (SMTP)'.
----------------------------------------------
If log on to this account via the web, messages are sent (and retrieved) OK, so the help desk can't help.

The account is set up as POP3 in Thunderbird, but the message refers to an SMTP server.

Changing the connection security or authentication method makes no difference.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Cheers

Dave

POP3 is the receiving protocol, SMTP is the sending protocol.

Make sure authentication is set to 'Normal Password' and that you changed the SMTP password as well as the POP3 password.

Re: Outgoing mail problems in Thunderbird

Morning Liquorice, thanks for the reply.

I only had the option to change one password on the BT site.

Tbird doesn't have a password change option. It seems that if it gets a request rejected by the outgoing server, the user is prompted to send the password to BT with an option to remember it in Tbird.

The server settings page shows the server type as POP mail server.

The security settings options are None, SSL/TLS or STARTTLS

Authentication methods are Normal password, Encrypted password, Kerebos/GSSAPI , NTLM andOauth2.

SSL/TLS and Normal password are used.

I cant find a way to access the password management facility in Tbird.

The suggested Tools / options route doesn't seem to be available.

Cheers

Dave

Go to Tools > Preferences > Privacy and Security > Click on Saved passwords then click on Show passwords. Right click on the password you want to change and click on Edit password.
