Have you checked to see if your antivirus or any malware program you have has blocked the email clients for some reason.
If there are no blocks I think you will need to call BT 0330.1234.150 and ask to speak to the email team to see if there is something at BT's end blocking your email account from accessing the BT servers.
As a test before calling BT you could set up a new BTMail email account or if you have another BT email account try adding that to Thunderbird to see if that will work. If it does it would help confirm that there is some issue at the BT end with your account.
Thank you for the response and information.
As sugested I have a domain that comes with an email address, I tried setting that up in Outlook and it connected and returned the emails without error.
So it looks like its just BT Mail thats refusing the connection.
Work permiting I will try the phome number you posted tommorow and see if that gets me anywhere.
once again thank you for your help and guidance, it is much appreciated.
In case you I was not clear, I suggested that you set up another BTMail account in order to see if it is a general problem with BTMail or just with your BTMail account when using an email client.
Using your own domain only proves that your domain is working not that there is a general problem with BTMail or a problem with your specific BTMail email account.
Thank you for your responce.
So I created a new email address in BT Mail, and tried accessing from outlook, no luck still would access it.
No it gets worse, I tried to reset the password of the new account, thinking it may be aI got the passwor wrong and had the pin no sent to my account, never recieved the pin nunber.
Secondly I now have lost access to the email on My Iphone, I tried to reset the account and now getting
the Imap server mail.btinternet.com doesnt support password authentication.
So what is going on with BT mail.
one frustrated BT customer.

The IMAP server never has supported password authentication, there is no need as the connection is encrypted anyway
You need to use plain authentication rather than encrypted.

Thank you gg30340 for the replly and patient.
The configuration on Ihphone is set up as suggested, so at a loss, as with the outlook and thunderbird conffiguration they are also set up as suggested.
Did try contacting BT through the messaging system, but that just went round in cricles and did not get anywhere.
so not sure what to do now that all attemps to recover have failed,
Basic checks: You are 100% sure you are using the correct password? If you have changed it since all this began try using the "old" password.
Did you check that your antivirus and malware program is not blocking BT?
If you are using a VPN try turning that off.
Last resort:- You could try a factory reset of your BT hub by pressing a pin into the recess button on the rear for about 30 seconds. If you have not changed the name or wireless passkey of your BT hub all your devices should auto connect when the hub restarts.
Thank yo for the quick respose gg30340
Unfortuantly I have changed the name, the key and the Admin password of the router.
I'm not using a VPN, and I know bad practice, havent changed the password for my main account in six or seven months.
I have been with BT since the ISDN years, so 30+ years and have had every router that BT have issued and never had this issue before, I'm am now on fibre have been for a couple of years and its absoulte pain to set up, so relucent to do a factory reset.
One Weird thing is that I set up a family account for my Wife and her phone hasn't been affected by this issue and can still get her mail via the emial client on her phone.
Anyway I suppose a long and ardouse phone call monday morning with Tech support.
once again, thank you for all the advice and patience it is much appreaciated.
