I keep getting the error message “cannot send email” password or username is incorrect (or similar sounding, I can’t remember exactly now.
I can receive emails on my iPhone but can’t send (they are stuck in my outbox).
I have deleted and uploaded the email to the iPhone (via other). It’s an old @talk21.com email. I know my passwords are corrected (tested them) Incoming settings =
server: mail.btinternet.com
Authentication: password
imap : (empty)
port: 993
This works as I receive emails.
outgoing
Host name: mail.btinternet.com
Username: my email@tall21.com
Use SSL : ON
Authentication: password
port: (I’ve tried 465 and 587)
I keep getting the message - cannot send email. Can anyone please help!
thank you
Are you presently a BT Broadband customer or are you paying for your email through a BT Premium email account?
If neither of the above your email account may have been downgraded to a BTMail Basic account which can not be used with an email client
See link
https://www.bt.com/help/email/bt-email-products
Are you able to log onto your email account using a web browser?
In any event the username should be formatted as user.name.t21@btinternet.com
I’ve just always had a talk21.com email account. I don’t have bt broadband nor but I never have, and have always had this email and I’ve had yhid email on my iPhone(s) for years, and now I don’t know why it’s not working, hence finding this forum and asking. Thanks
@gg30340 has just explained why it is not working. It has just taken BT a long time to downgrade your address to basic mail.
Thanks. I’d just have thought it wouldn’t have worked at all then, as I can receive emails via the iPhone (just not send them) and yes I can use my emails via the browser / webmail (but its painful to use, not user friendly).
Can I just ask, so my email is example@talk21.com
But now should it be example.talk21@btinternet.com for the set up?
? (trying to remember what I saw, as now replying I’ve forgotten the exact wording).
Thanks

Hi.
This could be a temporary glitch, so the best thing to do is nothing. (It's .t21 before the @). If you have an email stuck in the outbox, look at the initial one that failed, somehow copy it (pen/paper!) for future sending if needed, and delete it from the outbox, then try force a send.
Hey,
Thank you. Im so confused thought about the .21@
so my own email is example@talk21.com
But when I set it up on the iPhone / have now been looking, they (Google) advised having (incoming / outgoing host as mail.btinternet.com
so where does the .t21@ come into play? And where do I use it and how?
Thanks
Your email address is no longer example@talk21.com it is example.t21@btinternet.com.
The server name is mail.btinternet.com
Hey thanks
I tested this out, and the email didn’t work, but sending an email (from someone else) to my actual email does work.
So this works example@talk21.com (works)
example.t21@btinternet.com doesn’t work. Wouldn’t deliver.
ao I don’t think that is my email. This has been my email for 20years so I’m trying to hold on to it - but are we now thinking that it will absolutely not work on an iPhone?
there’s nothing I can do at all?
thanks
Hey @Lottiedot.
I've been doing a bit of digging on this one over the last few days, and we're just trying to establish what could be the cause here.
In the meantime, have you had a chance to test the BT Email app to see if this works, too?
Or does this face the same issues you had with the iPhone mail client?
