Email "temporarily locked out" but IMAP/SMTP all work fine?

Hi

I am unable to login to the BT email web interface (same for my wife's email on the same account) and get the message "temporarily locked out. wait 20 minutes". However IMAP and SMTP access via Microsoft Outlook and my Samsung Email all work fine?!

I have read the BT support note about repeated failures etc but don't think it applies as my mail clients are working fine.

Waiting 20 minutes doesn't help... still the same message. This happened before and I just forgot about it (I only login just to check and tidy up) so it could have been like this for weeks/months.

Any ideas? I'd rather not do a full password reset as that means updating a plethora of phones and tablets...

BT have had recent problems with webmail and the MyBT web service. It did not affect using email clients or email apps to access BTMail.

BT introduced compulsary two factor authentication, which caused problems for some users and then they carried out some other changes which caused serious problems for most of its users.

The problems have now apparently been resolved but it may be the case that those issue are what is affecting you.

Try clearing your web browser's history and cookies.

If you have not recently accessed your MyBT try that first and then use the Email button at the top of this page to see if that works. 

You may then have to follow the 2FA procedure before access to both services.

2FA is not required with email clients\apps..

Thanks for the reply...

I deleted all 63 (!) BT related cookies but it made no difference.

I can login to MyBt no problem (and it does 2FA) but if I select email on the top menu it still says locked out and does not attempt 2FA.

Since 2FA was made compulsory you can not have your MyBT and BTMail passwords the same.

If your BTMail and MyBT passwords are the same , have you tried changing your password for your email account?

No they are not the same. I guess I will have to try that - was hoping to avoid changing password on 2 phone, 2 galaxy pads, an ipad and a laptop....
