Gifted email addresses and future access

Go to solution

Hi, I've spent a fair amount of time reviewing previous q & a s on this but can find anything that matches my particular position.

I gifted my son his @btinternet email address when he went to uni and he's been using it ever since (12 years or so) and it's therefore pretty embedded in his email life. I'm pretty sure he has a BT id and affiliate account.

I've recently moved away from BT broadband and taken the precaution of setting up premium email - like him we have lots of links to our btinternet email accounts.

My question is this : what happens to our son's email account? He can still access it now but obviously doesn't want to only have a basic account that he can't link to his other mail apps. I feel this question won't be a run of the mill one so any help possible would be appreciated.

Thanks

All your email accounts including gifted accounts will be downgraded to Basic accounts when you leave BT broadband or Premium email.

Your son will get an email informing him of this.

He will have the option to take out a Premium email account in order to keep his account working with email clients/app if he wants to pay £7.50  per month.

If you have taken out a Premium account all the email accounts created from your broadband account will be able to use email clients/app.

This includes gifted accounts such as your son's.

Thanks GG

It looks like we are all ok then. I have taken premium email so his gifted account will continue with the full service too.

Seems to have worked out just as I hoped.

Thanks again

I've asked my son to log in and check his status.

He says

£0.00 owed but hus account does say ‘name - inactive’ at the top now

He says it’s still working fine.

Should I be worried ???

No need to worry. BT have to give him an account so that the gifted email can be managed. It is a zero payment account. If he was not given that his email account would have been downgraded to a basic account.
