BT told me about adding btinternet to outlook as a work around a few months ago. That seems to be working.
It is only webmail that is down. It is working on email clients and email apps.
I understand it is a fault in the Microsoft 'updates' to the opening pages.......
I trust an expert will appear and explain the technicalities!!!

We're aware of login issues with BT Mail on webmail and via the BT Mail app. You may not be able to login until this is resolved. We’re working to get them sorted as soon as possible. You can still access BT Mail via clients such as Outlook Express.
The server at prod-btemailauth.bt.com is taking too long to respond
