Re: Is two-step authentication now mandatory? No option to switch it off.

Strange coincidence....but since I made the comment about BT Email not being protected by 2 factor authentication....BT has removed the separate 'Email' option from the top of the MyBT welcome page of their website.

Is BT determined to drive its customer base away by making access as convoluted and difficult as possible?

I've been locked out of our account since an advisor persuaded me to get a new id. I was on chat for almost 4 hours to get it fixed and in the end I gave up. I'll have to contact them again at some point but I'm just tempted to leave in October when my contract ends. It's a complete farce.

It looks like somebody at BT has been tinkering with the MyBT web page and others which has removed the BT banner and buttons at the top of the page. I have notified the moderators of this to see if they can advise what is happening.

@daveattavistock

If you try now the BT banner is back along with the email button.

Perhaps the button was removed to  force customers to go  through MyBT and the 2 factor authentication in order to get to BT email (from further inside the MyBT portal)

No. If you had checked you would have seen that the whole BT banner and all he buttons were missing not just the email one. It was a glitch after some routine maintenance. The banner has been restored and it is fully working now.

You do not need to go through MyBT to logon to BTMail.

The BTMail logon page was not affected and if you had a shortcut saved to that page you would have been able to logon to webmail as normal.

BTMail is protected by 2FA. If your email account is not there is a problem if it has not activated on your account.

I saw your message saying if bt email is not using 2 step verification there is a problem.

I have been using 2 step on my bt email account since it was made mandatory, from last week I am now able to log in to my bt email account and the 2 step never appears on the log in page, after input username and pswd, it takes me straight thru to my emails, without a code sent to my mobile phone.

Log on via chrome on laptop. Cookies and cache always cleared after use.

When I log into mybt account it uses the 2 step ok

In mybt details 2 step authentication is set to on.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thank you.

As per @gg30340  Message 2 your device is obviously now recognised as a trusted device and 2FA no longer needed

If what you say is true, and the poster's device is now trusted....then why is 2FA still being enacted when accessing MyBT  instead of BT Emails ?

I do not know the parameters that BT use and for security reason I doubt BT will share them so this is purely speculation on my part.

One of the criteria may be the number of times that the program is accessed.

If that is one of the criteria it may be that because BTMail and MyBT are two separate programs and in most instances I would imagine that the email program is accessed more frequently than the MYBT program so the criteria for BTMail not requiring 2FA has been met and the criteria for not requiring it on MyBT has not been met and therefore still requires it.
