POP3 diagnostics

I had another almost 2-hour chat with them yesterday, and I have now given up on them.  

They tried to say that the resolution was to use IMAP!  On further questioning, and with me telling them that this was not a solution, this is what they then said...

"There have recently been restrictions placed on POP access due to platform/mailbox abuse affecting multiple mailboxes from connections world-wide. For security reasons users are recommended to disable POP clients
and switch-to an IMAP account on the client for access to new/recent mail. IMAP has additional benefits such as the access to folders including Spam and Sent as well as the Inbox".

"This is something which is being reported on a wider range hence a concrete fix would be on its way but again given the fact of the impact, this might take some time during which we really don't want you to stop using emails over your preferred method."

Goodness me, well done - you, at least, secured a response from someone that it is the intention of BT to gradually discourage use of POP accounts. It will be a shame as I rather like the soubriquet: "Post Office Protocol"....it has the "!) of a different world.

Here goes: about to take down my one and only POP account!

Hello P40,

After three days of working through every variation of an IA question, I took the plunge and removed all the traces of my Pop 3 account apple mail. 

Nothing seemed to happen to my saved folders full of  key messages. So I did what I was told once the IMAP account appeared......and lo, and behold, it worked. It does seem to have an effect on the inbox/today headings, which takers some time to settle down, but the access to all the local mailbox folders seems to be unaffected.

However, to lend weight to what your BT contact said about BT  getting annoyed with foreign interference on POP accounts, I have also discovered that my small home based Mac Air has been worthy of being cut off....so I have to do the same that!

All of a sudden, as of today, btinternet pop3 emails are now working for me on Outlook.    I haven't done anything to the settings etc., so I guess that BT have just fixed something. 

I've not received any communication or follow up from them, and none of the promised phonecalls ever materialised.
