I dont use MS Outlook.
Its the same with Thundrbird, OE Classic and Outlook Express. IMAP seems ok looks like pop3 issue. BT are passing buck as usual.

Re: Emails received full of gobbledegook with no subject or sender name

I have exactly the same problem. I use Outlook (part of Office) on my desktop, with Chrome, and it downloads all emails sent to my BT internet address, leaving them also on BT's server. Until about 11.50 yesterday (11th) all my emails downloaded to Outlook perfectly. Suddenly and unexpectedly all emails started coming in like this:

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Email sample 12 Aug 2025.jpg

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is a sample  - the email itself is extensive. It makes no difference whether the sender is a personal friend, a commercial sender, or a mailing list.

All the emails I receive remain as usual on my BT email server and are intact. I can read them.

The emails also download to my iPhone and are intact. I can read those.

If I forward an email from my BT online email to my GMX email account it arrives intact. (My GMX email account is entirely separate from BT.)

If I compose a test email in Outlook and send it from Outlook [myaddress @ btinternet.com] to my GMX  email account it arrives perfectly.

If I compose a test email to send to myself at both GMX and BT and send it from my Outlook (address @ btinternet.com) it arrives

  • perfectly in my GMX emails
  • just like the scrambled message above in my Outlook
  • in my BT emails online  as winmail.dat
  • and in my iPhone as winmail.

I genuinely hadn't changed a setting before this happened. When  my BT emails misbehave, which is rare, I don't go changing passwords or settings, I give it time to sort itself out and wait patiently until it reverts to normal. So far it hasn't improved.

I have read through the other thread and I don't know what to do to cure this.

There is nothing you can do to fix it yourself (other than moving to IMAP).

There is clearly a problem with one of the BT POP3 servers in the server farm which will hopefully get fixed.

From the Microsoft perspective see here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5520779/outlook-2016-classic-started-getting-x-v...

and here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5520826/new-emails-in-inbox-list-show-raw-header...

Seems that spam filter headers not being stripped and/or corrupting the email headers causing Outlook rendering to fail.

I've turned off my client-side email spam filtering but still getting the same problems, so likely a BT POP server issue?

hello, I am using Microsoft Outlook to receive my btinternet.com emails. Yesterday early afternoon they starting coming in with no Sender details and no subject and the email was full of code. I can find who the sender was but cannot see attached files and there is lots of incomprehensible code. It is making my life very difficult

Me Too. emails work okay within BT and are fine, however in Outlook - that I have been using for decades - the emails show as no 'To-From- or subject' Just a load of text that seems to be gibberish.

The questions only easy if you already know the answer

What we need is for a Forum Moderator to join the thread and report the issue to the BT technical team.  This is what happened when there was a similar issue a year ago - but it took 2 weeks to fix it (see the beginning of this thread)...
