I do not know if this is in the right section, BT doesnt make it easy to post.
I have been having calls from 08456021111 with no one there so I have blocked the number. yesterday I had approx 9 calls from them, it didnt ring or leave a message just on the screen showed the calls.
could someone tell me what this number is, searches show it as a BT number. is it important? and should i try and unblock it, although i don't know how to do it on my landline

On the BT8500 you have to delete the complete blocked number list. Whatever phone you have may be the same.
Thank you will do that now
Hi.
This number,
08456021111 IS safe. It is BT sms service letting you know someone has sent you a text message to your landline instead of your mobile. You call the number & it will give the message. I know because i have JUST rung it x

I would still advise proceeding with caution. As far as I know, this number is just as vulnerable to being spoofed* as any other - perhaps more so if scammers know people believe it's safe.
*spoofing is where an internet-based caller shows a false number on your display and in the call register.
Spoofed numbers are unsafe if you respond to the call, especially if you're invited to press a number to learn more. Provided that you preface the number with 141 to avoid divulging yours, calling back to try to identify the source is secure enough.
In general, it's best to let calls from unrecognised numbers run to an answering machine. Spammers and scammers tend not to leave messages.
This is BT's own ludicroulsy pointless text-to-call system.
Presumably this is one of BT's "services" which BT thinks is being useful. In reality it just annoys people.
Any reference numbers contained in these robot-toned message are converted to real numbers, which adds an extra craziness to the whole thing. For example, the number 4082341 will be "read out" by a synthesized voice as "FOUR MILLION AND EIGHTY TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND TWENTY ONE" and if such a number exists within a message it will likely be read out like this several times within the message, making the whole exercise sound nightmarish, surreal and more like an assault than something trying to be helpful.
Typical BT, then.
I got this: a BT-sounding female voice saying I had a text message (my phone doesn't take texts) - I pressed "1" and got a long series of complicated numbers! What is this? I just hung up and haven't found any charges on my account. But it's really annoying! Is the number 08456021111 an official BT number?
