For historical reasons, going back to Freeserve days, my parents have their telephone service with BT and broadband with EE. They don't want this to change, even though bundling both services with one provider would probably save them a bit of money.
I understand that such an arrangement (Shared Metallic Path Facility) will cease to exist once their PSTN connection in the exchange is switched off, probably later this year. I previously understood this to mean that they will then be forced to choose one provider for both services, but now I'm not so sure.
As we all know, BT and EE are now effectively the same company and the Smart Hubs between the two brands are identical (apart from the logos on them). Does this mean that BT Digital Voice can be delivered via an EE Smart Hub? Either using the BT Digital Voice handsets (confirmed to work with EE's routers), or by plugging an analogue phone into the green phone socket on the back of an EE Hub? If so, then I imagine that nothing would change for my parents: they would continue to be billed separately by both brands for both services (at least until BT as a consumer brand is fully absorbed into EE, which is now apparently not guaranteed to happen and, even if it does happen, is probably some years away). They would need a more up-to-date hub, that has the green phone socket, but I'm sure EE would be happy to send them one for free.
No judgement, cross-questioning or non-constructive speculation, please. I'm just trying to help my parents and would like some advice, thanks. I will approach BT and EE about this in due course, but would like a heads-up if possible.
This thread appears to suggest that what I've described would indeed be possible:
Solved: BT DV and EE Smart Hub Pro - BT Community
Although the EE DV service and BT DV service are basically the same , you won’t be able to continue as you are with two separate bills via SMPF , what’s more it’s a little ludicrous to have EE broadband, using EE DV in everything but name , expect BT to somehow to continue to bill for the calls and service charge once SMPF is removed ( that’s assuming that EE become the SoGEA service provider ) and more importantly why would that even be wanted .
The DV service , PAYG or Unlimited carries a cost on the broadband bill , you presumably would want somehow that charge not to show on the EE broadband bill , even though EE are providing it , and separately on a BT phone bill any call charges and the service charge ….in the event of a query on the phone side , who do you report it to , BT who in this arrangement do nothing other than collect the money from EE and send a bill to you , or EE who are actually providing the service ( even if under the hood it’s the same as BT DV ) it’s pointless in that it’s only purpose is to somehow assuage the customers disquiet about change.
Get them to make a decision, it’s not really even a complicated decision given they cannot sty as they are , BT or EE for both services it’s nothing more than a paper exercise anyway , in truth simplifying the paperwork…it will save money and remove this unnecessary complication.
TBH , expecting BT and EE to concoct some bespoke billing arrangement is fanciful nonsense.
As far as this comment,
No judgement, cross-questioning or non-constructive speculation, please.
There is no one here that can definitively say what will happen by the end of Jan2027 , if you don’t make a decision as far as selecting one provider , as far as ‘constructive speculation’ this can only ever be subjective, I consider this reply constructive , you may not , but if you don’t make a decision one will be made by BT or EE , you are speculating on being able to stay as you are albeit on SoGEA and not SMPF , the only answer for sure will be when you receive notification from BT or EE , personally I’d suspect that as BT have the universal service obligation, EE will advise you that they will stop providing broadband and for you to seek alternatives.
