Digital voice

Go to solution

I have received a letter saying my line will be upgrading to Digital Voice in a couple weeks. An engineer will do it remotely and won't need to come into my house. My question is I don't have a broadband connection. I've read I would need an adapter? Nothing mentioned in the letter about this, so what's going to happen on the day? Anyone had any experience of this please.

Re: Digital voice

I suspect your are going to be moved to a PDPL , a pre digital phone line, this is a half way house between what you currently have ( a PSTN phone line , its the PSTN that is being retired) and Digital Voice , that effectively needs broadband that  you don’t have .

As far as what happens on the day , you may notice the line goes off briefly while your connection is moved from one to the other , then that’s it , if you currently don’t have to use the STD code when calling local numbers , you will need to use the full number including the STD code .

You don’t need an adapter, even ‘proper’ DV customers don’t need one , they just make connecting a remote phone to the router a little easier, but that doesn’t apply to you ….your existing phone works as it does now , nothing changes in your home

BT calling what is really a portable phone socket for those on DV with a Smarthub 2, an "adapter" is a bit confusing because they mention it in the blurb they send out with DV announcements and this suggests to some people who are being moved to DV that they will need this adapter to use their existing phones with DV. They don't, if they can plug the phone directly into the hub.
Of course none of this applies to the OP because all the DV stuff will be done at the exchange - or maybe the street cabinet?

@Clarkatron,the reply by @iniltous  in message 3 - oh and the link that @imjolly has just sent - hopefully should put your mind at ease. Basically nothing will change in your home. But after the migration to DV you will need to use the full number, including the area code, when  calling what are/were local phone numbers.

Re: Digital voice

Thanks for all your responses to my recent question about Digital Voice. I have today been transferred to this service and I had an email saying I'd closed my current plan which is Home Phone Saver with various add ons .Rung BT and they said don't worry these emails are sent out in error and they've flagged it. Also I can't access anything on app or website as regards to what I have. It only shows bills. Please help! Also the orders page is showing 2 orders today which are closed and a current one going back to mid January still pending.

I'm not sure about the order going back to Jan, but when I was transferred I remember it took the website a couple of days to update properly.
