Hi,
I'm looking to port a existing BT number to a new BT account. I have recently separated from my partner and have a landline number that I use for work purposes, the current number is with BT (And the account in my ex partners name).
Is it possible to port the number without closing and terminating the existing account with BT? I have permission from my ex to port the number however we don't want to terminate the old account.
If I set up a new account online it allows me to put in the details and port the number, but in doing this will it leave the old account open as just a broadband account or terminate the account fully?
It's important I keep the number as I use it for work. However I'm open to alternatives such as VOIP etc.
Welcome to this user forum for BT Residential phone and broadband customers.
You would not be able to port a number which is associated with another account holder.
The account holder could cancel the phone service, but that would cease their broadband as well.
Why isn't this possible if I have the permission from the account holder?
Its simply the case that porting out the phone number, would cancel the broadband, that is the way BT services work. There is no other option.
Your ex-partner could start a new "broadband only" contract, but its very unlikely the released number could be ported to a new customer. Remember that all new phone services are BT Digital Voice, which causes complications.
Bear in mind that if you are a business user, you would have to setup a BT Business account.
