Unstoppable silent calls

Go to solution

Receiving phone calls on landline but no number shown and if left to ring doesn’t activate answerphone. Just rings. Doesn’t  show on call history/log or with BT operators. No fault found on line. Can’t block using 1572 as no number no voice. Always rings at same time. BT operators can’t stop it.  Any ideas please.

Hi @Teegee, welcome to the forum and thanks for posting.

As it happens at the same time each day would you please confirm the time it happens at?

Cheers

John

Re: Unstoppable silent calls

Hi JohnC2

thanks for looking at this problem.  The call happens at exactly midnight.  I have a digital radio controlled clock next to the ‘phone so I can see the time.  We disconnected all the phones yesterday evening and will reconnect today unless someone advises to do something different.  Any suggestions gratefully received.  Teegee

Hi @Teegee, thanks for confirming that for us.

Have a look at This Thread and see if that helps. Routine testing at night is no longer conducted.
If you would outline your set up at home we may be able to identify a possible cause.

Cheers

Re: Unstoppable silent calls

Hi John

Really appreciate your help on this.  The BT Nuisance Calls people said they'd never heard of anything like it.

We have this socket

Teegee_0-1680345505935.png

There are a combination of 'phones:

The main incoming 'phone in is a fixed hardwired BT Converse.  From the incoming box there are hard wire connecctions to 3 other sockets.

In these sockets are:

A BT Elements cordless base and single cordless 'phone,

A Siemens Gigaset cordless base with a single 'phone and

A Siemens Gigaset cordless base with 3 cordless 'phones

An in use total of 4 hardwired sockets and 6 'phones.

I know it seems excessive but it's a long house and we've been here 30 years without any problems in the past.

I hope this helps the diagnosis of the problem.  If you need anything else please ask.

I've reconnected all the units and so far no issues but I'm in two minds about leaving everything connected at midnight!

Regards

Teegee

Re: Unstoppable silent calls

Hi @Teegee, thanks for checking that out and posting back.

That does sound like a lot of equipment for a standard phone line. Is it possible to leave only a phone connected to the main socket tonight to see if that rings at midnight?

That would help see if the cause in on the internal or external side.

Cheers

Hi John

Thanks for the suggestion.  I’ll do as you say and disconnect all the units except the BT Converse that’s hard wired to the main incoming socket.
I’ll let you know what happens.

Re: Unstoppable silent calls

Hi John

Hi John

Good morning.

Not sure if the earlier message was sent so this is a repeat.

We didnt have any midnight call last evening (although that 'phone is some way away from our bedroom I'm sure we'd have heard it).

On the assumption that there was no call and unless there's a specific process I should follow, I propose to connect the second unit tonight and if that's OK the third and fourth on Monday & Tuesday.  If the problem is internal it hopefully should isolate the cause.

I'll let you know how it goes but if you have an alternative suggesstion I'd be pleased to hear it.

Cheers

Hi @Teegee thanks for the update, that sounds like a good way to try and fault find any problems with the equipment connected to the line. Post back and let us know how you get on after reconnecting the different units.

Re: Unstoppable silent calls

Hi John & Neil

A quick update.

All 'phones are now reconnected.  From a start of all being disconnected for 24 hours I added 1 hard wire to a socket per day for 4 days.

Last evening I added the fourth and last hard connection and I'm pleased to confirm trhere were no midnight silent/no number calls.  We appear to be back to normal.

It doesn't explain what happened of course.  It suggests it was an external influence but whether it was malicious, an exchange glitch or a genuine third party with a wrong number is unknown.  Just very wierd that there was no number shown, no voice, the answerphone didn't kick in (ours or BT's) and there was no log record of it at BT.

My thanks to you both for the support and advice - if you ever discover a reason for what happened and can solve the mystery I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Cheers

Teegee
