converse 2200 very quiet

Hi. 

Hoping for some helpful comments - I've searched the boards and nothing came up.

I have a BT Converse 2200 which has become very, very quiet - on loudspeaker (hands free) it cannot be heard at all, and via the earpiece it is a struggle to hear most callers.  Is this likely to be a fault in the phone, or could it be in any way connected to the line quality?  Callers can hear me perfectly.  The 2200 has a built-in amplifier which I have switched on and the volume set to maximum.  The amplifier and volume control certainly work, but it is still hard to hear. 

I recently went around the installation and checked everything was properly connected, so is it possible that a failed microfilter / splitter has caused this?

For reference, we have a master socket with an extension connected inside the socket.  The 2200 is plugged into this extension, via a microfilter; there's a BT modem/router/wap also connected to this extension via the ADSL socket on the microfilter.  At the master socket we have another microfilter and a cordless phone plugged in.  I generally avoid using that cordless because the sound quality is so dreadful.
