@rbz5416  That looks like the old interstitial plate.  I believe the Mk2 and 3 iplates could take an RJ45.  I'm not sure about the Mk1.

If I cut the cable then simply reconnect it by twisting the bare wires would that work?

Yes. I've found an Ebay seller with 100% feedback with a 0.5m one for £3.49 but can't link directly. Search Ebay for item 251690246370.

Cutting the cable would be a bad idea.

Yes.

I've no direct experience with the seller but his feedback indicates it should be safe purchase. Although there's probably little, if anything, to be gained from changing to a shorter cable other than aesthetics.
