Internet Speed.

Go to solution

Hello , Im on the Full Fibre 900mb plan from BT . I just got my Smart Hub 2 in the mail 2 days ago i followed the instructions clearly , plugged the red ethernet cable into the Openreach Moden and into the Wan port on the Hub.

Hub seems to be working fine , it's blue light and in the settings Full Fibre mode it's ON. Openreach modem LOS is off and the others are green, but my internet speed doesn't seem to match the plan i bought. When i do a speed test my download speed is a merely 100mb if that , on some tests i get 80.

Do you guys have any idea what the issue might be? Thanks.

It's most commonly the case that the WiFi adapter in the device you are using for the test is only using 2.4GHz, or you are using an Ethernet cable between the router and your device that's damaged or can only manage 100Mbps.

If you dive into the router's Web pages, there is a screen that will tell you the speed at which the router is connecting to BT.

*It's not out of the question that the router could be faulty, but it's rare!

I'm not really into tech tbh. Im only using the cables provided with the hub. Will it be easier just to call them and they can send someone or?

What device are you running your speed test on , is it wired or wireless ?, 100Mb seems suspiciously like the device or cable (if it’s a wired device) isn’t capable of more than 100Mb , if it’s a wireless device, and fairly new , then it may be a provisoning issue , basically you haven’t been ‘set up’ with the profile you asked for and presumably are paying for …however even if that were the case , 100Mb is too high for F2 ( 80Mb max ) and too low for FF100 ,which confusingly is 150Mb …my guess is it’s your equipment or cable , if it is the Openreach tech won’t be able to do anything apart from demonstrating on their own equipment the higher speeds being delivered

I was testing on my phone so wireless , i just moved into the apartment so i don't have my laptop rn . I will try to connect the hub to the laptop thru and ethernet cable  and see if it's any difference in the speed. But even on wireless it shoudn't be so low i guess. I also saw on the openreach website that speed may fluctuate for up to 10 days after activation but i dont know what to think about that.

My brother-in-law has the same broadband plan and on his wi-fi i get up to 350-400mb download.

There is no  10 day "fluctuation" time with FTTP or as its also known, Full Fibre. It should give the correct full speed from the get go.

Wireless speeds can be affected by wireless and other types of interference so no ISP will guarantee wireless speeds hence the reason you should if at all possible get a wired speed test but having said that your wireless speeds are very low.

Post the stats from your BT Smarthub and they should assist in determining if there is a problem with the connection to the hub.

https://www.bt.com/help/broadband/learn-about-broadband/learn-about-the-bt-hub-manager

To do that log onto the Smarthub admin page and  click on Advance settings, enter the admin password found on the label on the Smarthub, then click on Broadband then post the screen print or cut an paste the stats from Connection Status to Connection Information. Do not worry about showing the Broadband username and password. It is the same on all Smarthubs.

Also check the FTTP status is On.

Has your brother in law got the same router as you? But then again 400mbps is pretty woeful on a 900mbps package.

I like the majority up above suspect the router, not a malfunction though just not up to the job.

To fully take advantage of what your paying you need a wifi 6 router.

The BT SH2 you was given was brought to the market in 2018 and is wifi 5 . EE currently offer wifi 7 on your package

Re: Internet Speed.

I just got a wired connection thru my laptop and my speed on fast.com it's equivalent to the plan i'm paying for , 950 even 1gbps.  Wi-fi speed it's still low but i don't really care about wi-fi tbh, maybe the hub is a bit outdated as Kodikid mentioned.

I guess my problem it's solved.

Have you tried running the broadband speed test within the MyBT app? It’ll show the speed to the hub and the speed to your device as separate figures.  In the app select Your Products and then Broadband. You should then find ‘Broadband Settings’ then ‘Speed test’.
