I notice that TP-Link are prepping consumer routers with SPF+ Wan ports negating the requirement for an ONT, do BT support users connecting fibre to consumers own router rather than using the openrach ONT? Of course assuming the consumer does not require digital voice or BT TV.

That will not be possible because its Openreach that provide the ONT, and each one has an unique hardware serial number which is used to identify an individual connection on the fibre network.
If you had a PON (Passive Optical Network terminal) then you could use an SPF+ adapter as your data is disentangled from that of your neighbours before it enters the property. The ONT (Optical Network Terminal) that OpenReach supplies, allows for the single fibre to be passively split outside the property and for a single fibre to then be fed to you and your neighbours, with the ONT filtering what's on the cable so you only see your own data.
So, unless I've misunderstood the above, nope you can't use and SFP+ type Wan connector!
If you've a fibre optic card with the correct transceiver connector for the openreach SC your PC or server can act as a pppoe log in and router. Your particular account's line has already been segregated at the FttP box.
No you can’t use anything other than the Openreach ONT to terminate the fibre cable , no doubt someone with more time on their hands than is good for then ,and the necessary skills , could possibly snoop on the dialogue between the headend and Openreach ONT , then replicate it on a third party device, but in practical terms , it’s not possible, as stated the ONT needs to be registered with the headend, swapping to a random unrecognised device will simply never authenticate .
@ictis-insvla This is a 3 year old thread and you appear to be missing the point if by fttp box you mean ONT. If you mean something else, it is not as simple as creating a PPPoE connection, the correct channel associated with the ONT serial number has to be extracted as 32 channels are presented by the fibre
