Yes, I quite agree.  Anyone that is using a WAP 24/7 should really invest in a real one rather than a jury-rigged hub anyway.

For myself, the reason I have a second one is for DV redundancy, so it gets to play WAP in its spare time.  While everyone is fretting about phone calls in a power cut, they seem to have overlooked that if the SH2 breaks or its power unit goes pop it will take BT several days to supply a replacement.

As @WSH alluded to, the whole concept of repurposing a router as an access point dates back to a time when consumer products didn't really exist outside of expensive business products. Times have moved on & there are any number of residential style products available at reasonable prices. Some of which combine the convenience of a powerline link to the router.

Repurposing a router that way is a now a poor choice & choosing a SH2 an even poorer one IMO.

OK, so, its time to ditch the SH2 and start again?
Do you have any recommendations for the best kit?
Our house currently has three BT mesh discs and we have a wired point for a sort of garden room that's just been installed (but has no hardware on the end of it).
tbh, I'm so confused with all the offerings out there, I don't know where to start (and I thought I was reasnably tech savvy!)

Any thoughts?

Having dived on to this solved thread rather than starting a new one, it is not entirely clear what you are trying to achieve.

The thread is about configuring a spare SH2 as a Wireless Access Point.

Are you saying you don't already have a second SH2 to configure?

Only the Mods may have access now, but there are no hidden secrets in there, Just Google "router as access point" & take your pick of the many results & YouTube videos. But I'll say it one last time, in 2023 it really is a poor choice. Even if funds are tight, consumer APs have been around long enough to pick one up used for little cash.

Sorry to jump on someone else's thread, but can I ask if the other ethernet ports on the access point BT hub also work, like a normal network switch would?

Is it possible to clone the SSID to match the parent network for relatively seamless roaming?
