Upgrading from Fibre to Full Fibre 100 - Master socket query

Hello all and thanks for popping in,

I currently have an old 30mb package (i think it was the initial fibre rollout -- its not very fast in the current times). Although there is multiple people in my house, only i use wired internet for my computer and devices, everyone else uses Wifi. I think i use the BT Home Hub currently (looks like a grainy wide satelite).

I am booked to upgrade to Full Fibre 100

My original Master Socket is downstairs but i managed to get the installations guy to install the box in my upstairs bedroom, so that i can take advantage of the wired connections without having to make holes in the floor etc. In my room from this previous install is an Open Reach Mk3 socket, which i think is an extension as i was warned by the installions engineer but it all worked fine so i was happy. (phone and internet, dont use phone anymore).

As far as i am aware, these are not even used when i get upgraded to the full fibre, but my question is would the installations engineer be able to install all of my stuff in the upstairs front bedroom again like before? Again, the original master socket is downstairs i believe and upstairs is currently an extension (Mk3 Openreach).

Worst case scenario ill have to do some work and plug in a wired ethernet through the floor to downstairs if this isnt possible! Thanks all for your help

Re: Upgrading from Fibre to Full Fibre 100 - Master socket query

the position of the master socket is immaterial as that is not used for an FTTP install,  does the current phoneline come from a pole or underground into your home as fibre cable will normally follow same route.

you need to decide where the ONT (fibre modem) will be located as your router needs to connect to ONT with ethernet cable,  the engineer will just fit the ONT and then connect router to make sure working then up to you to connect your devices

ONT looks like this

Re: Upgrading from Fibre to Full Fibre 100 - Master socket query

As already stated, the existing copper network becomes redundant with FTTP , the installation people try to accommodate the consumers wishes , and putting the ONT in a bedroom rather than a ground floor location should be doable , however it’s not guaranteed, for example if the lead in from outside were at the front ( because that’s where the pole is or where the external cable duct is ) and it was a rear bedroom, that would probably be refused.
Many will want the ONT and router near the existing NTE master socket simply to make it easy to connect any phone sockets upto the router , but if this isn’t a consideration and you simply want the ONT/Router close to where your Ethernet connected PC is , it should be achievable

Re: Upgrading from Fibre to Full Fibre 100 - Master socket query

Currently our phone line is from a pole out front, infact where the cable connected to my house it is literally 1ft away from the corner of the bedroom window where i would like the install to be done (if possible). We do not plan on using home phone at all and havent used phone for many years. Just purely looking to utilise internet (and ethernet direct to my pc in the same room if thats where the box can go).

thankyou

Re: Upgrading from Fibre to Full Fibre 100 - Master socket query

Yes theres a telephone pole in which the cable connected to my eaves then runs straight down from my bedroom to the ground floor. I would like it installed in my bedroom (Both the telephone pole and cable are out front). Theres even an existing hole in the wall from where we had a previous Virgin ISP cable ran into my room many years ago, potentially they can use this again so its even easier?

Thanks

Re: Upgrading from Fibre to Full Fibre 100 - Master socket query

If you are fed from a pole to your house eves then in some cases the fibre is then ran down to ground level where CSP is fitted then cable ran back up into your room and then connected to ONT.  My install was similar from pole to house eves but my installer then brought fibre cable in through eves and into my loft conversion and fitted a CSP and ONT together which would be ideal for you.  You then connect hub to the ONT

ONT + internal CSPONT + internal CSP

Re: Upgrading from Fibre to Full Fibre 100 - Master socket query

Perfect, sounds similar. As long as i know its a possibility that they will do this (apart from anything they need to install at ground level, i am unaware of what steps they need to take initially), as far as i can tell if its all new wires/architecture then its just a case of doing all the work through my front bedroom wall 1 floor up from the ground, instead of doing it through the front room at the front of the house? Sounds good so far, thankyou 🙂
