Hello,
I have BT Fibre 1 at 57mbs into my house with no sign of any future upgrades. I currently have a Home Hub 5 connected to 4 whole home discs. The internet into the house is very reliable but the discs are anything but. I have spent so much time reading up on it, running through every possible diagnostic, rebooting and restarting and resetting until I go blue in the face. Sometimes they are totally reliable for a week or two but then the drop outs start again. The reliability of wifi is important to me as I work from home a lot of the time. I'm so fed up with this now that i would like to throw the lot in the bin and start again. My question is, can anyone recommend a good router/mesh system for this package? the choice is overwhelming and whereas I'm happy to spend a reasonable amount to get a good reliable system, I don't want to splash on something that is overkill for a fairly low spec connection. thank you for any advice you can give.
WiFi is inherently unreliable. It is quite possible it is your environment rather than the Whole Home discs that is the problem.
Coming at this from a different eco-system, I'm always slightly on edge with just the number of "whole-home" discs BT users seem to have! I'm in a new build three bed semi with partition walls, and other than the router I only need a single mesh unit in order to get WiFI around a corner and into the cupboard housing the heating valves (a couple of other devices connect to the unit too...).
Genuinely I would try reducing the number of discs - sometimes less is more! And be realistic about what speeds you need in various rooms!
I would adopt the mantra that if a device can be wired, then wire it. I’d say wireless congestion/channel overlap is at the root of your problems.
Thank you so much for the advice. I've disconnected a couple of the disks. Let's see what happens. Really appreciate your words of wisdom.Dave
Thought I'd just pop in here to give an update. Despite everything I tried I could not make the BT Whole Home disks reliable. They'd sometimes go days working fine but then one, two or more disks would drop. I spent more time rebooting the system than using it. In the end, I saw some TP-link mesh devices on sale on Amazon, bought those and they haven't missed a beat since (touch wood). So far very happy wit these. Despite the outcome, thank you for being here with your advice, it is massively appreciated.
