Winter Olympic Games Coverage

Looking at the OFCOM statement on the

WBD and the BBC plan to provide live and on-demand Olympics coverage

In 2023, the International Olympic Committee awarded all media rights in Europe for the four Olympic Games from 2026 up to, and including, 2032 to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and WBD. The BBC is a licensee of the free-to-air UK media rights for the Olympic Games derived from the IOC’s agreement with the EBU.

The result of these arrangements for this year’s Winter Olympic Games is that:

  • WBD will show live and on-demand coverage of the whole of the Games through its discovery+ streaming platform. It will also show live coverage of the Games on the TNT Sports 2 channel throughout the event, including repeats overnight.
  • The BBC will broadcast live coverage of the Games on BBC One or BBC Two and via one further stream, at any one time. There are no restrictions on which sporting events it may show live, and there are no limitations on how many hours of live coverage – or of highlights – it may show on its two streams. The BBC will also broadcast live radio coverage on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra.

Re: Winter Olympic Games Coverage

Tonights opening ceremony is showing as being available on discovery+ in UHD from 17:30 for 5 hours ,

Normally the UHD live stream on discovery+ matches the programming schedule on TNT Sports Ultimate on EETV however today the EPG says that the opening ceremony is only scheduled  on TNT Sports Ultimate between 17:30 and 19:00 (a mere 90 minutes). Subseuently the TNT Sports Ultimate schedule on EETV shows coverage of the Leicester Tigers   Newscastle Prem Rugby Cup from 19:30. The discovery + app currently shows two intended streams of that rugby match but neither are marked up as being in UHD.

It would be unusual for discovery+ to have two simultaenous UHD streams and it would be unusual for live UHD content on EETV TNT Sport Ultimate not to be available in at least that same level of quality on discovery+.

Re: Winter Olympic Games Coverage

I won't be watching the full five hours of athletes walking round the stadium waving little flags and self-important officials making the same old boring speeches. Hopefully there will be highlights showing just the entertaining bit /a la/ Danny Boyle's production at London 2012 which I will watch later as I am watching the footy daan the pub this evening.  🙂
