Help from BT

My ex-husband has taken over the broadband line since our divorce, while the house is up for sale. I can’t afford to move out. There is no phone signal in the house and he is refusing to give myself and my daughter the password. He says I must pay him £50 per month. I contacted BT and they say my only option is to apply for a second line and this can take up to 3 months. I’m isolated. This doesn’t seem right! Any advice?

This guy is financially abusing you and your daughter.

This  abusive relationship needs to involve the police

Re: Help from BT

This has nothing to do with BT.

You would be best to contact a solicitor however if you are now divorced and he is paying for the broadband then he is under no obligation to let you use it for free.

Re: Help from BT

I have a court order saying equal access to utilities. Solicitor paid for and correspondencec sent that there should be  a normal broadband package and I will pay half. He refuses. He took my name off the bill, though I am co-owner of the house and this wasn’t agreed with BT. BT won’t give me access to the one broadband line going into the house now! I can’t even make a call and have no internet! My daughter is studying for alevels and can’t contact any of her friends when at home!

@Kodikid  With respect, he’s doing no such thing and it’s a ridiculous and wild accusation. I was in a similar situation where I had an ex-Wife who actually wanted me to carry on paying the bills after I moved out. I cancelled everything in my name as one would expect when no longer living there, gas, electric, phone, water, everything. Being taken for a total mug was not in my playbook.

Clearly, nothing to do with BT, it’s a civil matter between the affected parties.

Re: Help from BT

Hi @Jonese1

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation, and I understand this will be a difficult time for you.

I think the best next step is to reach out to your solicitor, as they'll be able to offer you the best support and advice.

Take care,
Linzi

Re: Help from BT

You seem to think that BT can in some way provide access to the broadband within the home , but that’s not the case , as stated , if the terms of your separation/divorce allow equal access to utilities etc while you live in the same property, then it’s a matter for your solicitor and possibly the courts …BT can’t magically provide you with the WiFi password, even if they could , your ex presumably would just change it .
FYI , the password etc only applies to WiFi access , if you had a laptop for example with an Ethernet connection you could physically connect that to the router with an Ethernet cable (assuming the router is accessible) , but this issue is no different if you were both able to use the family car and he hid the keys from you …and realistically you wouldn’t expect the car manufacturer to get involved in that dispute.

I think the Moderator has said all that needs to be said any further in the matter. None of what the OP has posted, is anyone else’s business but their own. Anything that follows is just pointless commentary to be fair.
