Is FTTC being upgraded?

Go to solution

Afternoon all,

So our estate is FTTC with pretty average superfast speeds (circa 39Mb).

The last couple of days a BT/ Openreach contractor (FNC) were lifting the covers up and down the street to the ducts on the path installing fibre optic cables. I did ask him if we were finally getting Ultrafast broadband, to which he replied its fibre optic cables.

Is it safe to assume they’re laying the ground work for the estate to be upgraded to FTTP? If so, how long (roughly) does the big switch on take?

Thanks in advance,

Sam

How long is a piece of string. It can take months or years for  FTTP to be available. Only Openreach will know the schedule and they will not share that with you.

Its in scope, i’d checked that before, timeframe of 2021-2026.

Was just asking/ checking if anyone knew whether the fibre work conducted outside our house is a prelude to the major work on the cabinet starting?

As per my previous post. Once the infrastructure ie the fibre is laid it can still take a long time for FTTP to be available and until it is Openreach will not give you a date.

Edit: For info FTTP does not use the cabinets.

As an update, my postcode/ address is now eligible for FTTP… it seems their cable installation a few weeks ago is now live and active

I have an order waiting for completion… very happy

Lucky you. At our place we've had all the fibre installed in the ground and I've seen CBTs at the top of the poles and, in a duct outside our house, in the ground. FTTP is now available .... but not with BT. It is being offered by two (!) minnow companies which I can imagine will fold once they have burnt through their government grants. You are one of the lucky ones!

Are the minnow companies using the OR infrastructure?

That would be very interesting!
