Scam broadband renewal email

Go to solution

I have just renewed my Broadband with BT. I was prompted by an email May 18 ,that the ebay phone rep says was a scam. The email had all my details,so I phoned BT. If it was a scam it is the most convincing I have ever had. The email advise that my new contract would be £60.99 up by about a third, it had <bt@updates.bt.com> address. I always ignore emails and contact companies directly, just as well! This one is worth watching for an exact clone of a BT message

Ebay phone rep? What on earth has eBay to do with BT?

In future, applies to almost everyone, should you receive any offers for whatever at BT, always log-on to your MyBT to see whether the same offer or others are available there to you.

If you still have the email, you should forward to :

phishing@bt.com

Re: Scam broadband renewal email

Hi @keying welcome back to the community and thanks for posting. Was it a BT employee who advised it was a scam email?

If you have any concerns I'd recommend following @Carlusha's advice and forward the email to phishing@bt.com

Thanks

Neil

If ever you receive something like this then ignore all links in the text/email and contact the company directly using the info from sites such as this.

I only learn by making mistakes and owning up to them - boy do I learn a lot!

Just to let people know that this scam is still circulating.

I received an email from updates.bt.com about my renewal. It was a perfect copy of the BT emails with my name, and all the account details, telephone number, email address. Normally you can detect a scam email because they do not have such detailed information

For various reasons I did not follow it up but I could easily have done.

My concern is how did the scammers get so much detail? Is BT security so bad that all our personal and account details are available to such scammers.

Hi @davidneill

What is it that made you think this is a scam email? The email address you mentioned looks like a genuine BT Email address.

If you're ever concerned about phishing scams, you can forward them to phishing@bt.com so that a security team can look into it.

Re: Scam broadband renewal email

I actually renewed my contract by phone and when an engineer came out there was confusion over what was included in the package, complete or partial fibre wifi. The email had said complete wifi but I only got partial for the same price.

Rang BT to clarify what was included in my contract and when I quoted the email to the person on the phone they said that they had no record of that email and that it did not come from BT. The 'dispute' escalated and I was passed to another person who again said that the email did not originate from BT.

I will send this one on the the phishing address. Didn't do that initially because it all appeared so genuine.

Could this be BT trying to cover up their own error?

Re: Scam broadband renewal email

The email address is a legitimate BT email address, @davidneill. It's more than likely the email was sent from BT, but for some reason wasn't documented against your account.

You can never be too careful. So, you've done the right thing in reporting it based on the information you were given. The security team will look into how the email was sent, and take any appropriate action if it was not legitimately from BT.
