Hi, I'm currently on an EE broadband contract. My mum receives Universal Credit, so I wanted to change it to her name and to over to a social tariff (BT Home Essentials / EE Basics) to lower the monthly bill.

I called EE and they ran a DWP check with her details. They confirmed her DWP details were correct, but said she's not eligible.

Is this because the broadband contract is in my name and not hers? Can I transfer the account to her name, or will she need to open a brand-new contract in her name to qualify for the social tariff? Has anyone else dealt with this?

You can not transfer broadband accounts to another person. She would need to take out her own broadband account.

You would need to cancel your contract however if you are still in a Fixed Term contract you will incur cancellation fees.

You would need to work out if the saving of the social contract is better than the cancellation fees you would charged or it may be better to wait until your contract has ended.

My contract ends on 22nd Oct this year. Should I get cheaper broadband deal or just cancel it?

Only you can decide that.

It will cost you the amount you pay per month till the end of your contract if you cancel so that would be approximately two months worth of cancellation fees.

Once you decide what to do you could then get a broadband contract in your mums name and if she is eligible the Social contract or you could wait and get a cheaper contract in your own name.  The choice is yours.
