Incorrect Default Notice impacting Credit Scored

Go to solution

Back in 2023, I swapped broadband providers from Sky to BT.  Previously I had been paying BT £7.50 for mine and my wife’s email addresses for many years.  This charge was subsumed into the BT broadband package or so I thought.

Three months later I get a letter through the post to say that I am £22.50 in arrears. After a number of calls BT had not linked my wife’s email address under the account, agreed the mistake and credited my account with £22.50. Exactly the same thing happened on 3 more occasions over the next 12 months.  Finally I managed to speak to someone who followed through and linked the accounts rather than just crediting my account with the incorrect arrears.

Fast forward 2 years and I get refused credit on a new mobile.  I have never missed a payment for anything, so I used CheckMy File to understand the problem.  Perfect score except for 12 months of incorrect arrears payments showing from BT.    How do I get these removed?  The incorrect action from BT is impacting my ability to borrow and while I can live without a new mobile, I may need credit for a replacement car in the next 12 months and do not want to be in a similar position.

Thanks

Mike Hughes

@Mikejhughes

Unfortunately the only way you will probably be able to resolve this situation, is to contact each of the credit reference agencies and supply them with proof of the mistake so that the error can be removed. BT will not do that for you. See following link for addresses:
