When phoning BT to negotiate a new contract and digital voice, I was put on hold for sometimes 20 minutes at a time. I thought it was a free phone from my BT landline to them but it cost me£12 which I thought was disgusting. Thanks BT from a disgruntled pensioner .

If you are on PAYG, then its not free. Try 0800 800 150, which is free.
If you used the BT 0330.1234.150 number this is chargeable unless you have a calling package which gives you "free" calls that include 03 numbers.

Thank you for info. I have question if you can help. I am on BT Home Essentials 2 (Social tariff) with unlimited call plan. Now they are upgrading to digital voice but with pay as go. I called them and they told me somebody would call back later. After couple days, nobody called. Can they change package ?
I am not aware of how the social tariff works but I would imagine you should be able to go onto the unlimited calls package. You would be best to call BT Billing 0330.1234.150 and they should be able to advise you with the correct information.
Have you received notification you are moving to digital voice and that your phone package will move to PAYG or are you just assuming you will be moved to PAYG. your call package on home essentials should not change when over to DV
You can also ontact billing using message now which might be easier
