Re: False Default on my credit file

Hi @John1984 ,
Sorry to hear this. I’m unfortunately going through a very similar situation and feel like I’m getting nowhere. I terminated my BT Broadband contract 6 months into a 2 year contract due to the fact I was moving home. After many phone calls in regards to the early termination fee, there was a misunderstanding on both parts where I understood I wouldn’t have to pay the early termination fee. Fast forward a few months and I get a call from debt collectors saying I owed BT money - it was investigated and I was told that I misunderstood the situation and I am liable to the early termination fee, which I had no issue with setting up a payment plan with the credit agency. Again, fast forward another month and I put in an offer on a property which was accepted, but then only to find out that I was declined mortgages due to a “default” on my credit report due to BT claiming I hadn’t paid the outstanding fee in time. Upon further investigation, it transpired that they had been sending reminder letters to the property I had moved from (whole reason I cancelled in the first place), but also sending emails to an email address that wasn’t my correct one.. so I had no correspondence from the phone call with the misunderstanding to being chased up by debt collectors. I have 0 issue with paying the fee as I take full liability that I terminated the contract early, but I have an issue with a default being added to my account when there was no contact made with me to let me know I had an outstanding balance. Why would I voluntarily choose not to pay knowing full well it was going to screw me over big time in the future (like it has).

I’ve contacted the various credit record companies and have raised a dispute but similar to you, I have had an offer accepted on a property to I NEED this removed from my file ASAP.

Re: False Default on my credit file

Good morning David,

I have, but I was told they can’t do anything about it and it needs to go through the credit report companies such as Equifax/Transunion etc. One of the customer service guides I spoke to said that there is no way to contact the credit file team as they are “back room staff”.. not very helpful as I need this rectified ASAP.

Re: False Default on my credit file

Hi @CalumV15 and thanks for the reply.

I can completely understand your frustration with this. I'm not sure there is a lot we can do to help but I'll be happy to try. I've dropped you a private message so send over the details and we'll take a look. Just a heads up though, we're really busy at present so it's taking longer than usual to reply.

Cheers

David

Re: False Default on my credit file

Hi
Did you manage to resolve this? The exact same thing has happened to me due to an BT error of passing on a £17 debt to a debt agency (who never contacted me) without telling me. My remortgage application was rejected due to this and has caused me paying £650 extra per month on my mortgage payments. BT has admitted their mistake but I am unable to have this rectified.
