I have been trying to get into my microsoft account but every time I request a verification code it says one is sent but I do not receive it. Using a gmail account I get a code. I believe the email should come from account-security-noreply@accountprotection.microsoft.com

Have you checked your junk folder?
Yes. Also checked blocked sender list and made one change. Will be trying again tomorrow.
Add the email address to your safe senders list and check you have not blocked the email's address and domain in your blocked senders list.
