BT SMTP Server Fault

I suddenly found my emails composed on my phone weren't being sent. I tried removing and re adding my BT account from apple mail but no luck, it complained that the SMTP server password was wrong which was a complete red herring as I can login with the password to my webmail. On top of this if I disconnect my phone from my wifi and use 5G then the email sends.

I then searched this forum and found this is a very common problem and it is definitely down to issues with one or more BY SMTP servers. BT please get this fixed ASAP as it is a right royal PITA and I am paying for premium email service.

Just to make sure, could you check the settings are correct as shown in the BT Email server settings page

Speak to you both soon 🙂

Re: BT SMTP Server Fault

All settings are absolutely correct. Ic they weren’t then the email wouldn’t send when I disconnect from WiFi and use 5G. This means that the only change is my iphone’s IP address, which in turn means it is definitely the SMTP server at fault. Please don’t ping pong this query just get your engineers to fix the issue please.

Re: BT SMTP Server Fault

Iphone 12 for both of us with upto date software. As suspected it turned out to be the outgoing server. Its disappointing that BT did not publicise the outage which resulted in wasted time trying to resolve the issue.

Re: BT SMTP Server Fault

The issue is still there. It maybe they fixed it on the sticky SMTP server that your IP addresses were associated with but if yours is fixed there must be yet at least one other SMTP server with the issues 😞

Re: BT SMTP Server Fault

It looks like the problem is with BT’s SMTP server, especially when you're on Wi-Fi. Since emails send fine on 5G, the issue is likely with BT's mail servers. You can try using other servers like SMTPmart, SMTP2GO, or SMTPget SMTP for better results.

Re: BT SMTP Server Fault

This looks more like a BT SMTP routing or network-side issue rather than your password, especially since it works on 5G but fails on WiFi. When this happens, it’s usually something on the provider’s outgoing mail servers or connection handling that needs fixing from their end. If you need a stable workaround, you can switch to a third-party SMTP service like SMTPmart or Amazon SES, which generally work reliably across networks and avoid ISP-related SMTP issues.
