Landline phone is not in same room as router

I've been reading about the new Digital voice and seems that you will need to connect your landline phone to your new router. My router is in my 3rd bedroom (office) next to my computer. There isn't a phone in this room, nor do I want one to be. My landline cordless phone is downstairs in the lounge and there's a second handset in my main bedroom. So, how is this going to work?

Re: Landline phone is not in same room as router

Hi.  You'll receive a card about a month before the switchover inviting you to request a free adaptor.  This plugs into a mains electric socket close to your phone.  Then, you press a button to pair this to your router.  On switchover day, you plug the BT cable from your phone into a socket on the adaptor and that's it - all done.

If the second handset in your bedroom is a cordless one for which the one in the lounge is the main "base" unit, you don't need to do anything unusual to that one - it will communicate with the hub via the one in the lounge.

An alternative to the DVA would be to  see if you can buy a spare charging base for the phones. That way you can keep the base plugged into the SH2 but have the handset downstairs.

Re: Landline phone is not in same room as router

Many thanks. Where my phone is in the lounge it plugs into one single electric socket (its not a double) which is next to a BT master socket (not a plug as such socket). Is this sufficient, or will I need to buy one of those plugs that you can put more than one thing into?

DVA is Digital Voice Adapter, effectively a portable phone socket that just needs a mains socket.

Re: Landline phone is not in same room as router

Hi.  You'd need two electrical sockets then - one for the phone to plug into, and one for the adapter (DVA = Digital Voice Adapter) to plug into.  If you don't have two sockets close to the phone I suggest you buy a mains extension lead - perhaps one of those with four sockets on - and plug that into the wall, then your phone and the adapter into the extension.  Then, on switchover day, unplug the BT wire from the wall socket and into the box on the adapter.

Hope this helps.
