Setting Up Digital Voice

Go to solution

Hi,

A couple of basic questions if anyone could help please.

At some point in the next few days BT will be moving me to Digital Voice. My current cordless phone has two leads coming out of it, one to power the charger base it sits on and the other to the "phone" outlet to the splitter thing in the wall. The other link from the splitter thing, "ADSL Modem", is to the Smart Hub2. So that is my current internet and phone set up.

1) On switch over day, can I simply unplug the connection in the "phone" outlet on the micro filter splitter on the wall and put it into the "Digital Voice Connection" port on Smart Hub2. The video in the link below says "the hub will then configure with your home phone".  My existing phone is a few years old. Will this be straightforward as I'm not sure if my existing phone will be able to "configure" with the hub. Or am I worrying unduly and it's a piece of cake

2) Last year, BT did send me an "Advanced Digital Home Phone" which has never been used as the switchover due for 2022 didn't happen. The written instructions in the link above plus the second video, seem clear enough. My question does not relate to either of these but rather: Will I still need to unplug the connection in the "phone" outlet on the micro filter splitter on the wall and put it into the "Digital Voice Connection" port on Smart Hub2. The reason this looks a bit dodgy (at least to me) is that connection currently goes to my existing phone. However, the new ADHP only has a port to get it charged up, and not to connect in any way to the filter thing that was connected to the "phone" outlet on the micro filter on the wall, which got moved to be connected with the SH2 for the set up using my existing phone in 1). Yes, that's probably difficult to understand if you're not looking at the actual current se-up as I am.

Or to put it another way, when I set up the ADHP, it's not clear what I stick in the green port on the back of the SH2. If I stick in the thing that's currently in the "phone" outlet on the splitter thing on the wall, (as I would do in 1) that in itself, doesn't look like it would do anything as the other end isn't attached to the ADHP unlike as it would be if I was still using my current phone in 1)

Or is it the case, that I would no longer need anything coming out of the "phone" outlet on the splitter thing on the wall and also nothing in the green port on the back of the SH2 as the ADHP would communicate wirelessly with the SH2 without any direct physical connection between them?

I appreciate that may not be too easy to follow if you're not looking at the current set-up and having to visualise in your head!

Thanks

Re: Setting Up Digital Voice

If you wish to keep your existing phone setup, simply unplug from the master socket and plug into the green socket at the rear of the hub. Nothing else to do.

If you wish to use your Digital Voice handset as well as or instead of your existing setup, simply register the handset with hub, there is no physical connection required. The hub is a DECT (cordless) base station.

The DV handset won't be able to access your contacts on your existing phone, you will need to enter them on the DV handset.

when you get DV you simply unplug the phone cable from master socket on wall and connect to green socket on the back of hub and your phone should work

The DV phone pair with the hub using dect  the unit the connects to power socket is simply a charging base for the DV phone.  to pair the phone if you go to hub manager then select the phone number you see then follow instruction to pair handset

Thanks for the replies. That seems to indicate that if I use the Digital Voice Handset, I don't need to have anything connected to the Digital Voice port on the back of the SH2 and don't need anything connected to the "Phone" connection on the splitter thing on the wall (which I do have for my current phone) Is that correct?

yes   -   unless your existing phone has facilities that you want to use

Re: Setting Up Digital Voice

Ok, so I received an Email from BT today saying the switch has occurred and I can use Digital Voice. My current landline phone going straight to voicemail confirmed it was no longer in use.

I unplugged the "Phone" connector from the micro filter splitter in the wall and plugged it into the green port on the back of SH2. So I'm still using my existing phone as this point and expecting the hub to configure with my phone. However, when I ring the same landline number using my mobile, it immediately goes to voicemail again. When I simply pick up the phone, without ringing it from my mobile, it sounds "dead" with no sound at all. No dial tone or anything. So it looks like the SH2 has not configured with my phone.

I've had the SH2 for a couple of years with no issues accessing the internet.

Any suggestions? I do have an "Advanced Digital Home Phone" which BT sent (still in the box), but I'd like to do the basic test of checking my existing phone works before configuring the ADHP.

Looking at the BT YouTube tutorial, it does say that when setting up the ADHP, you need to press the WPS button for a couple of seconds. However, it doesn't say you need to do anything if using your existing phone which is the case here.

Thanks

Go to the hub manager 192.168.1.254 and you should see you phone number and showing active.  If still not active that explains why phone not working and you need to phone FTTP TEAM who deal with DV 08005874787

Thanks, that address shows a box with the phone icon and "Not configured". Also "Hybrid Connect Status - Not configured". Not sure what the last one is.

I'll ring that number tomorrow and see if they can help.

Has anyone on here had this before?

Thanks

Try resetting the hub and see if phone is then showing active/configured. If still nothing then phone number I posted
