Spend hour on live chat doing repeating tests that have been done before by me and by the two BT engineers.
Was given a phone number to call and ended up with a gentleman who said he will take over my problem and has promised to call on Thursday (now Sunday).
I feel confident he will get this sorted out.

Good news digital phone was connected Tuesday.
Had promised callback today (Thursday) as promised, he explained what went wrong & sorted out removal of voicemail for me.
I am now a happy BT customer.
