Hello, please it's quite a few now that I'm attempting to replace my smarthub2 with a decent device, but unfortunately last time i dug into the internet connection matter the fastest line was adsl2 , so now with fibre and ont modem i am very confused. I've been reading and asking a lot but now I'm even more confused. So i have the open reach small white box which connects to a bt smarthub2, the connection type here is FTTX, speed is about 75mb in download. I tried with a Netgear nighthawk 7000 which is a modem router supporting all sorts of connections, but when i put isp username and password respectively firstname.lastname@example.org and BT it always says credentials are wrong, so i assumed there's something wrong with my Netgear. I bought a TP-Link Archer vr2100 which is a modem router as TP-Link support suggested it would work, but same issue, when i put isp username and password this one too says credentials are wrong.
I do not want to use one as a router and one as a modem with an ethernet cable , i want to throw the smarthub2 away or leave it if no swap is possible.
Please would anyone suggest what's wrong? Did bt change password and username ?

you need to set the netgear or tplink to router only as the ONT is the modem then quick setup connection to PPPoE and use the email@example.com and password BT
Thanks very much... It turned out that my Netgear d7000 hasn't a router only option, it has modem+router and modem only, so weird...
My tp-link instead connected immediately following your advice, so thanks infinitely, but speed and coverage are shamefully lower than the bt smarthub2,so I'll have to try another router now that I've learned a router only is enough for my line... Hilarious that bt technical support kept telling me "so don't you have the password on the back of the router?" whilst i was asking whether they had changed isp credentials... Really thanks so much...
Hi @email62181 I'm glad you got a solution from @imjolly. I'm sorry you didn't get the answers you were looking for when you contacted BT technical support. Our helpdesks can only provide assistance with BT-provided equipment so you're best posting any questions about 3rd party set-ups on the community.
Indeed i have the assumption that isp username and password are well within the "BT-provided equipment" so the shallowness of bt operators has no excuses like where to post the question, indeed the solution was very easy that everyone at bt should have been able at least to understand.
The username and password have been posted hundreds if not thousands of times on this forum and a simple Google search would have revealed them to you.
As the credentials are embedded in the BT hub, there is no reason for the customer services representatives to know what they are.
Also reading the first post could have been revealing to you to avoid this useless reply
And of course they have to know them, they're not volunteers, customers pay money. At least understand what's the question is about without confusing an isp password with a wifi password.
