Modem

is it better to have a separate modem rather than The BT smart hub or home hub to run a mesh system does anybody have any suggestions of a modem to use

Hi @Philmo1 and thanks for posting.

What kind of connection do you have? Are you on fibre to the cab or full fibre to the home? If you search for 'mesh' you'll see there are quite a few posts about that including types of router other members are using etc.
