The current trend by other providers is to provide facilities to record more than 2 channels simultaneously, it would be a useful facility and help keep up/ahead of the competitors if BT could do this also.
Both of the current boxes Youview & BT Vision are currently limited to 2 recordable channels, this is a legacy of the times when IP via multicast was not available and any IP programs that were, could not be recorded.
Times have changed, we still have only two Freeview tuners in each box, which would still be used to record the main channels, the other IP channels would be recorded directly to the hard drive as the new sport/18 extra channels are currently on BT Vision and shortly to the Youview boxes.
The limiting factors would be the processor & hard drives capabilities and the width of the broadband stream.
I am aware that only 2 of the main Freeview channels could be recorded simultaneously, but if the demand was there, these freeview channels could also be streamed via the multicast system, which is not unlike the system used by satellite and cable companies.
The advertising blurb could contain the usual "record up to X channels".
